Identity theft happens every day and can take a huge toll on and individual.
Identity thieves usually use another person’s information, such as a social security number, date of birth or an account number to open false credit card accounts, charge existing credit card accounts, and obtain new loans.
- Protect your PINs and other passwords. Avoid using easily available information such as your mother’s maiden name, your birth date, the last four digits of your Social Security number, your phone number, as identity thieves can use this information to access your accounts.
- Review your credit card statements monthly. If you have any charges you don’t recognize, call your credit card company right away.
